BACK TO OVERVIEW

Parc de l’Orient

This masterplan comprises a large-scale development focused on leisure, recreation, golf and sports. The site is located adjacent to the former quarries of Tournai, the Carrières de l’Orient.

The design is based on a complete integration within the existing environment, both in terms of form, ecology, and functionality. To achieve this, an extensive design study was carried out regarding the siting and implementation of the different activities.
The future cycling path running through the site acts as the project’s guiding principle and organising axis. This divides the site into a northern section, bordering the quarry, and a southern section. Along this axis, a series of organic volumes are arranged in a serpentine configuration, with formal interventions that respond to the surrounding context.
At the head of the site, near the roundabout Ma Campagne, a landmark building is envisioned, housing a climbing tower. More centrally located is the sports complex, featuring indoor padel and pickleball courts and both indoor and outdoor tennis courts. This complex is deliberately set back from the quarry, creating space for a park with areas dedicated to tranquillity and relaxation. The tail end of the site accommodates a Golf Academy and hotel, while the entire southern part of the site is transformed into a golf landscape with facilities such as a Pitch & Putt, Driving Range, and a PopStroke.
On the northern part of the site, a brasserie and event space are proposed, complemented by a potential new viewpoint offering magnificent views over the former quarry.

A fragmented layout of the building programme was deliberately chosen to achieve multiple objectives simultaneously. Not only does this provide each “world” – sport, recreation, golf, and relaxation – with its own unique identity and experience, but it also helps minimise noise disturbance, preserve wildlife migration routes, and enhance the permeability of the site.
The various volumes feature differentiated cornice heights that respond to the immediate context. Building heights are reduced closer to the quarry, where biodiversity roofs are also implemented.
The masterplan also includes a detailed study of the landscape design, addressing mobility and the integration of ecological systems, while taking into account water management, the enhancement of local flora and fauna, and the incorporation of renewable energy sources.
