Roof extension

A new, characterful dormer overlooking the rolling landscape of the Flemish Ardennes crowns this bungalow, transforming the attic into a fully functional living floor.

The design aimed to achieve a minimal intervention to the existing roof structure while maximising the usable space within the attic of this single-family home.

The house is arranged in a Z-shaped plan on a steeply sloping site, enjoying expansive views of the Flemish Ardennes. Large glazed openings draw the surrounding landscape into the interior, reinforcing the connection between house and setting.

The new dormer extends along the full length of the central wing, facing the garden, and is supported by a steel frame. Reclaimed bricks from the existing house were used for the solid sections of the dormer, allowing it to integrate seamlessly with the original architecture. Together with the repeated rhythm of the window openings, this creates a cohesive and unified composition. The vertical subdivision of the windows echoes the proportions of the existing house while reflecting the surrounding trees, further strengthening the dialogue between the building and its landscape.
