Subdivision project Robert De Preester

This subdivision plan is the result of an extensive design study and masterplan analysis of both the site and its surrounding context. The outcome is an organic layout centred around a green communal space, interconnected by pedestrian routes.

From the very beginning of the site planning process, the preservation of a green central core was a key design principle. Slow mobility routes for pedestrians and cyclists were integrated to ensure permeability throughout the development. An initial intermediate design proposed a more traditional arrangement of the residential clusters and parking courts, while already conveying the character of a green residential courtyard.

The subsequent design phase further strengthened the concept of a green heart by relocating all motorised traffic to the perimeter of the development. This approach also created a buffer between the new homes and the surrounding buildings. As a result, the central area remains completely free of cars and can be dedicated to landscaped green spaces, play areas, and pedestrian paths.

With regard to building massing and materiality, the design explored both a more traditional architectural language with pitched roofs and a contemporary, pragmatic approach with flat roofs. To minimise the visual impact and maintain a human scale, the dwellings are grouped into several clusters and limited to two storeys with flat roofs.
